A Success Story Of Adolescent Girl Living With HIV/AIDs.

We do a lot of HIV/AIDS-related work with really great success. In the course of our unrelenting works some stories stand out, the story below is an example:

Doom Gwaza is an eleven(11) year old adolescent girl who lives in Makurdi Benue state Nigeria, and this is her story. "I was born HIV positive and was accessing treatment at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Makurdi but my parents did not disclose my HIV status to me because they felt I was too young hence didn't know how to begin"
To begin the process of disclosure and build my self esteem, First Step Action for Children Initiative (NGO) established adolescents girls club which I enrolled into. The purpose is to empower girls by providing access to quality information about their rights (including their sexual and reproductive Rights).
It is also to equip them with life skills, which will build their self confidence and equip them with life to nagotiate for their rights and voice out their concerns.
I participated 12 club sessions using an approved curriculum.
According to her, the club has helped her to stay away from bad/unproductive friends.
"I didn' know I was HIV positive before now because I was only on treatment on a daily basis"
"The club also help me to have a healthy communication with my parents and they were able to explain about health challenges".
"I was also taught and urged to always adhere to my treatment regimen, as this was the only way I could live a healthy and happy life, and eventually reach my full potential in life".

To promote the recognition and acceptance of the rights of women and children and ensure that children have the best possible prospects for survival, growth, development, protection and participation.
