The memories I had as a child fostered my passion in helping children. I worked with children for 16years as a government staff on the community level. I realized at during that period that children where neglected and left for one parent to manager which always fell on the mothers.
This was hard because I knew how my parents, the love and care raised me plus support they showered on us was impeccable; this I now pass-on to raising my children. As a child, my fondest memories still remains the time I spent with my parents: My Dad was a trained nurse who applied his vocation everywhere he went, mostly at home. He cared for us as children and helped my Mother in doing many household chores. This was not common with fathers in those days but he did it. He would bath, dress, feed and play with us while my Mother engaged in other household chores. We experienced true love and care from both parents and understood the need for both parents to collaborate in building up a child.
Then you can only imagine the cultural shock I got, working with children at the community level as a government staff. I realized that such care and support was not always the same in other homes especially with millions of children across the country, Nigeria. In most of the communities I worked in, I realized that most children were often neglected or a one-man show, the mothers’.
The warm family love care and support for children became my mission. I worked relentlessly to change things but the progress was dead slow.
As I retired from Government work, the passion to ensure all children enjoyed the same love, care and support I got as a child, grew in me. It drove me into taking action on a personal level; I took the First Step into providing love, care and support for the Nigerian children who needed a First Step into a better future.
